The History of Chicago Lumber Company

150 years in business is more than a milestone, it’s a legacy. Explore the history, moments, and values that have shaped Chicago Lumber Company since 1876, and the story we’re still building today.

150 Years of Chicago Lumber Company

In 1876, Chicago Lumber Company opened its doors in Omaha with a simple purpose: supply quality lumber and building materials to a growing city. In 2026, we proudly celebrate 150 years of serving Omaha and the surrounding region, supporting the people who build, supply, and improve the communities we call home.

Reaching 150 years is a reflection of the people, relationships, and reputation that have carried Chicago Lumber through generations of change. As Omaha has expanded, industries have evolved, and building practices have advanced, Chicago Lumber Company has remained rooted in what matters most: dependable service, trusted products, and doing business the right way.

From 1876 to the Early Years of Growth

Chicago Lumber Company was founded by M.T. Green, who brought his lumber business from Chicago to Omaha during the city’s earliest years of growth. The company’s original location at 702 Douglas Street placed it at the center of a developing community where builders needed reliable access to materials.

Just one year after opening, Henry F. Cady joined as partner, strengthening leadership and accelerating growth. By the early 1880s, Chicago Lumber was supplying millions of board feet of lumber across the region—an early sign of the scale and demand the company was built to support. As the business expanded, it outgrew its original space and relocated in 1885 to a larger yard on 14th Street between Marcy and Leavenworth.

A Home Built to Last

In 1922, Chicago Lumber Company established what would become its long-term home at 1324 Pierce Street. The company constructed a durable brick headquarters building—recognized by its distinctive green tile roof—and moved operations there.

More than a century later, that location remains the heart of Chicago Lumber Company. It stands as a symbol of what the company represents: strength, longevity, and a commitment to serving Omaha for the long haul.

Celebrating 150 Years

This year marks 150 years of Chicago Lumber Company. It’s a moment to reflect on where we started, how far we’ve come, and the people who made it possible—from early leadership and long-time employees to the customers and partners who have trusted us across generations.

While our products and services have evolved over time, our foundation has stayed the same: a commitment to quality, reliability, and relationships that last. As we celebrate this milestone, we’re proud to honor the legacy behind us and continue building on it for the future.
